Wayne Eugene Fillis

October 27, 1950 — November 5, 2024

Mount Vernon, TX

Wayne Eugene Fillis was born October 27, 1950, to Clarence Leroy Fillis and Dorothy Elmira (Hastings) Fillis in Wichita, KS. Wayne passed away on November 5, 2024, at home with his loving daughter and her family in Mount Vernon, TX, after a 3-year battle with dementia.

Wayne was proud to have served in the United States Marine Corps for six years, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant and several medals during his service in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1975, leaving the military to raise his daughters. He spent much of his career as a truck driver and, finally, a school bus driver before retiring in 2021.

Wayne was a cowboy at heart and loved the countryside and animals, especially horses. He was passionate about learning new things, was very open-minded, and loved to make people laugh. He was a dreamer and loved sharing his dreams with his family. He loved airplanes, motorcycles, reading, writing, and being in nature. He had a kind heart and an open door and would do anything for his family and friends. Some of his family's fondest memories are of him playing guitar and singing some of his favorite country songs.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Davis-Fillis; daughters, Kimberly (Joshua) Wood, Jacqueline Fillis, Heidi (Marcus) Copeland, and Clarissa Fillis; 15 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren (and two on the way); brothers Arthur (Patricia) Fillis, Terry (Lila) Fillis; and sister, Beverly Countryman as well as many nieces and nephews.

Wayne will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He truly touched the lives of everyone who had the honor of knowing him.

Services will be announced at a later date. We ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his honor to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Alzheimer's Foundation.
