On Sunday, July 19, 2026, Patsy Nell Stevens passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 93. Patsy was well-loved in her small town. She was the loving mother of four. She always provided support and love for her family, working tirelessly to provide opportunities for her children. She would proudly boast of their education, careers, and families.
Patsy was born on March 5, 1933, to Thomas Sidney Potts and Delores Ruth Stevens in Wink, Texas. Her mother and father divorced soon after her birth and then Ruth remarried Clyde Thomas Allen. They had 2 sons, Donald Ray Allen and Joe Thomas Allen. Ruth died in childbirth when Patsy was 9 years old. Her maternal grandparents, Gertrude Pearl Baker and Thomas Allen Stevens raised her in New London, Texas where she attended New London and then Leveretts Chapel Schools. After graduating from High School at 16 years old, she went on to study at Kilgore College, where she played the oboe in the Ranger Band under direction of Major Walker.
Patsy was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years Arbuary Lee Hicks, her son David Paul Stewart, Jr., infant son Joe Don Stewart, her parents, grandparents and half-brother Joe Thomas Allen.
She is survived by two children, Stephen James Stewart (Joy) of Irving, Texas, and Paula Ann Hooks (Keith) of Kilgore, Texas, daughter-in-law, Jimmie Lynn Stewart of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, half-brother Donald Ray Allen, of Cat Spring, Texas. She leaves behind 5 grandchildren, Tracy Lynn Stewart, Brandon Thomas Hooks, Sonny Jay Stewart, Ryan Matthew Hooks, and Christopher James Stewart; and 10 great-grandchildren, Stewart Charles Taylor, Spencer David Taylor, Ryan Daniel Cde Baca, Jace Beau Cde Baca, Jackson Matthew Hooks, Noah Thomas Hooks, Weston Michael Hooks, Eli David Hooks, Madilyn Jane Hooks, and Sydney Lynne Hooks.
She loved reading books and researching topics on the computer. In the evenings she was rarely without a book in hand. She had an encyclopedic knowledge of her inventory. And despite having no discernible filing system could always locate the right book.
Patsy remained active in her retirement, working in her yard with her flowers, and meeting friends for lunch at various local restaurants several times a week.
A celebration of life will be held at Purley Baptist Church at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 25, 2026. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made in her memory to the church at 309 FM 900 West, Mount Vernon, Texas 75457.
