John Reginald Gunn Jr. was born to John Reginald (Reg) Gunn Sr and Mildred (Millie) Matthews Gunn on February 12, 1938, in Daingerfield, Tx.
His father was an architect working for the Civilian Conservation Corps and while designing and building Daingerfield State Park, John was born at home in their bathtub. Having his father's namesake, John grew up being called "Ditto or Dit" by family and friends.
John was preceded in death by his father John Reginald Gunn Sr., mother, Mildred Jean Gunn, and Sister Virginia Mae Gunn.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years Donna Garrett Gunn, Sister Barbara Ryon of Ft. Worth, daughter Felicia and husband Dave of Plano, son Garrett and wife Wendy of Mount Pleasant, grandchildren Jake Gauer, Amanda Romero and husband David, Gabrielle Mitchell and husband Matt, Gatlin Gunn and wife Morgan, Emilee Allison, and husband Josh. As well as 10 beautiful great grandchildren.
John grew up in Azle, Tx and graduated from Azle High School. He then attended the University of Texas at Austin and transferred to North Texas University to complete a math degree. John found his bride to be while in college and they married in 1962. He briefly taught High School math long enough to determine that was not what he wanted to do. He was very mechanically minded and could repair, fabricate, and build anything. His sweet wife had the same dryer for 30 years because he kept fixing it. He worked for, and retired from, the Carroll Company in Garland, TX after 38 loyal years. Building entire product lines and the machinery that made industrial and consumer cleaning products.
While living in Garland his family joined Lavon Drive Baptist Church, and though raised in church, John accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at a winter camp ski trip in Colorado. He was a deacon for many years and enjoyed singing bass in the Choir. After Retiring he and Donna moved to Mount Vernon, TX on lake Cypress Springs where they lived for 14 years before moving into Mount Vernon where they have been for the past 5 years. He worked at First Baptist Church Mount Vernon for 10 years where he performed general building maintenance but was most at home on the mower and doing grounds care. There was not a man or friend more dependable, and his word was his contract.
He was known to have the strongest handshake in Frankin County. John sought out ways to help others and would do anything for anybody with no expected return. He was naturally a quiet man that let his actions speak for him. He did not waste money or words.
He passed from this world just as he lived, quiet and peaceful, surrounded by his wife, kids, grandkids, and friends. Heaven just got sweeter for those that knew him.
