Tribute James Durwood "Buzz" Hare, age 81, of Sulphur Bluff, passed from this life in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 9, 2019 at his home as a result of complications with diabetes.
Durwood was born on December 20, 1937 in Big Springs, Texas, the only child of J.C. and Allie Howell Hare. He attended schools in Sulphur Bluff and East Texas State University in Commerce.
Buzz joined the Army Reserves before transferring to the United States Navy, where he worked as an airplane mechanic. After a tour in Japan, he went to work at Lone Star Steel. Durwood began cutting hair and quickly became a favorite barber in Commerce during the 1960's. In the early 1970's Buzz returned to Sulphur Bluff to take over the family dairy and became an activist for struggling dairymen representing AMPI in Washington, DC. He was one of the first in the East Texas Area to raise and show registered Red Brahman Cattle.
Durwood was also a truck driver for Ballard Trucking and Pilgrim's Pride.
In his younger years, Buzz enjoyed hunting, camping, and water skiing. Later in life, he spent his time watching Fox News and playing dominoes at the Hagansport Store. Durwood loved to tease, and he enjoyed a good joke.
Buzz was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Sulphur Bluff Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years. He was also a dedicated member of Lake Chapel.
Buzz married his loving wife, Shirley Haley Hare in May 1959. After 52 years of adventures together, she preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents and one son-in-law, Bruce Case.
Buzz is survived by his daughters, Tammie Case, of Talco, and Tina Jaggers, and husband Terry, of Sulphur Bluff.
He was the proud Granddaddy to Ryan Case, and wife Lisa, Rachael Case Thomas, Jaci Jaggers Postell, and husband Michael, Jill Jaggers Eudy, and husband Craig, and Jentry Jaggers. He also had seven great-grandchildren, Alexis, Reese, and Presley Case, Allie Thomas, Dailee And Coy Postell, and Hannah Eudy.
Funeral services for James Durwood "Buzz" Hare will be held at 3:00 P.M., Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at Lake Chapel with Brother Gerald Hood officiating. Burial will follow at Sulphur Bluff Cemetery with Mike Betts, Ryan Case, Craig Eudy, Mark Hare, Jentry Jaggers, and Michael Postell serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
