Inez Victoria (Lewis) Byrd

April 17, 1926 — April 25, 2021

Tribute

Inez Victoria Byrd, 95, of Franklin County, TX, passed away Sunday, April 25, 2021 at the home of her son and daughter-in-law where she had been living since 2014.

Inez was born on April 17, 1926 in Celina, TX to Charles Alfred and Hattie (Harris) Lewis.   She was a life-long Baptist but had more recently attended the First United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon.

She was preceded in death by her husband George William Byrd, her parents, ten brothers and sisters and numerous nieces and nephews.

Inez is survived by her son, Randall L. Byrd and daughter-in-law Charlotte Stempel Byrd of Mount Vernon, TX and three grandchildren, Christopher W. Byrd of Lewisville, TX; Catherine "Catie" Byrd of Norman, OK; and Elizabeth M. Byrd of McKinney, TX.

The second youngest of 11 children, 9 who survived into adulthood, Inez grew up on the family farm during the Great Depression, where they grew corn, wheat and cotton and raised cattle, pigs and chickens.   At 17, during WWII and after the death of her father, she moved to Fort Worth to live with two of her sisters, Ruby and Virginia.   She worked during WWII at a textile plant in the war effort.  In 1944 she went to work for the Montgomery Wards home offices in Fort Worth, TX where she worked for 42 years. Inez met her husband George while dancing in the late 1940's, they were married until his death in 1981.

Inez, known as Nana to her grandchildren, liked bird watching, working Sudoku and was well known among the family for her fried chicken.   She loved making dinners for her family and we will all remember a funny phone call we got once while headed to her house that simply stated, "The gravy is getting cold."   Her phone calls were often short and to the point.   We will all miss her.

She will be buried at Laurel Land Memorial Park in Fort Worth, TX next to her husband.   A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Mount Vernon to be announced at a later date.

The family gives special thanks to Chambers Hospice and her caregivers.
