Tribute Bun T. Stretcher, Jr., age 92, of Mount Vernon, passed away peacefully in the late morning hours of Wednesday, August 28, 2019, at his home. Bun was born nearly a century ago, to the late Bun T. and Nettie Mae Miller Stretcher. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Avon and Nolan Stretcher and Sister-in-Law, Modine Mays Stretcher.
Following high school, Bun joined the Navy which started his life-long career and love as a merchant marine and sailor. Bun left the navy after earning the rank of Lieutenant. He continued his maritime career as Captain for Lykes Brothers Steamship Company experiencing countless adventures on the high seas and in cities around the world. He had many amazing and unbelievable stories to tell of his time on the seas.
Bun was a quiet man of high intelligence and generous spirit to those he loved. He enjoyed reading and learning. He was a lifelong student who took classes online up until he became ill. He liked growing trees, fruits and vegetables. He experimented with grafting different types of trees to see what he would get. He loved to hunt, fish and travel.
Mr. Stretcher is survived by one nephew, Michael Stretcher, of Eustace; two nieces, Polly Stretcher Blackwell of Tyler and Penny M. Stretcher of Fort Worth; two great-nephews, Christopher Blackwell and David Blackwell; and by a host of other cousins and relatives.
Graveside services for Bun T. Stretcher will be held Saturday, 9/14/2019, at Mount Vernon Cemetery at 10:00 am.
